Can any pharmacy compound in Boise, Meridian, Eagle and the surrounding area?
Preparation of these specialized products requires chemicals and equipment that are not available in most pharmacies. Our pharmacists have received extensive additional training in compounding techniques. We have a support network that generates a constant exchange of ideas, innovations and techniques involving compounding, and includes several Ph.D. chemists and pharmacists who can research the feasibility of new formulations.
There are several reasons why pharmacists compound prescription medications; yet, the most important one is patient non-compliance. Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. With a physician's consent, a compounding pharmacist can change the strength of a medication, alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest, and add flavor to it to make it more palatable. The pharmacist also can prepare the medication using several unique delivery systems, such as a sublingual troche or lozenge, a lollipop, or a transdermal gel. Or, for those patients who are having a difficult time swallowing a capsule, a compounding pharmacist can make a suspension instead.
Often parents have a tough time getting their children to take their medicine because of the taste. A compounding pharmacist can work directly with the physician and the patient to select a flavoring agent, such as vanilla butternut or tutti-frutti, that provides both an appropriate match for the medication's properties and the patient's taste preferences. Compounding pharmacists also have helped patients who are experiencing chronic pain. For example, arthritic patients who cannot take certain medications due to gastro intestinal side effects. Working with their physician, a compounding pharmacist can provide them with a topical preparation with the anti-inflammatory or analgesic their doctor prescribed for them.
Meeting patient & practitioner needs
Our compounding pharmacy focuses on meeting special needs. This may involve compounding height/weight-appropriate pediatric medications, injections for impotency, medications for veterinarians in a variety of dosage forms and flavors, alternatives in hormone replacement therapy, or dosage options, such as transdermal gels, when treating hospice patients. The ultimate goal in preparing any of these customized medications is to help the physician and patient achieve a more positive therapeutic outcome.

Medication Review: Why should you see a Medication Specialist?
Are you and your body getting the most out of the money you are spending on your monthly medications? As health care costs continue to rise, everyone is looking for ways to reduce their monthly medication expenses. As newer, more expensive drugs come onto the market, pharmaceutical companies send their sales representatives out in droves to encourage doctors to prescribe their medications instead of the competition. That is the way they make money and it won't change anytime soon. We must accept that, but what we (and especially you) don't have to accept is the fact that that new blockbuster drug is the best thing for everyone. Everyone's situtation is different. Their might be a less expensive and just as effective alternative out there for you.
Perhaps you were put on a medication to help with your condition and it is working fine, but now you have been put on another medication to help with the side effects caused by the first medication. Before you know it, you are on more medications than you can remember to take. Some might even stop taking some of their medicine out of frustration. If you are getting frustrated or are just curious to see if their are alternatives to what you are taking now, you need to sit down with one of our Consultant Pharmacists.
Is your doctor telling you that your medication regimen is working great, but you still don't feel like your old self? It may be that while your medications are working just fine at treating your condition, they may also be leading to vitamin deficiencies, a loss of essential nutrients or enzyme deficiencies. Perhaps a side effect of the medication is really nothing more than a nutrient deficiency that can be treated with a simple dietary supplement rather than a more expensive prescription medication.
Did a family member recommend a dietary supplement, but your aren't sure whether it will interact with any medications that your are taking? Let our friendly knowledgeable staff sit down with you and go over what you are taking and what supplement might be okay to take to increase your overall health.
Our Consultant Pharmacists work along with your doctors to help you get the maximum amount of health benefits from the least amount of medications.
Email us or call (208-947-0877) to meet with a Consulting Pharmacist to see if we can help you get the most out of the money you spend on medications.
We provide diabetic education to our customers through videos, books, pamphlets, and one-on-one counseling. We pride ourselves in accomodating the special needs of diabetic patients.
As a special service to area folks who suffer from diabetes, we have organized a Diabetic Counseling Service. We meet by request in the conference room at our office. In our meetings we discuss diet, exercise, medication, proper use of monitoring equipment, and other factors which can improve the short- and long-term health prospects of diabetes patients. Family members are also welcome to attend.
Saliva testing is an easy non-invasive way of assessing your hormone balancing needs or status. This information allows you to supplement hormones according to a plan tailored to your needs with the help of a physician. Well-balanced hormones regulate everything from reproduction to emotions, general health and well-being. An imbalance of any one hormone can throw physical and mental health out of balance, causing aggravating and even serious health problems. Stop in to pickup a test or call the pharmacy to learn more about Saliva testing. You can also visit Labrix, our testing service's website, for a full list of FAQs or checkout their recommended reading list.
HHRT for Men
As men age, their stores of androgens called dihydroepiandosterone (DHEA) and testosterone decrease dramatically. The resulting decrease in hormones, called andropause (or “male menopause”), can diminish energy, sexual function, bone and muscle mass and the ability to concentrate. Andropause has also been linked to depression, anxiety, weight gain and atherosclerosis. Human hormone replacement therapy (HHRT) may provide a safe and natural alternative for men experiencing these difficulties. Symptoms may be improved without the side effects and potential dangers of synthetic androgens.
Feel free to contact us to see if hormone replacement is right for you. A personal or telephone consultation with our clinic staff (a nominal fee applies) will start your journey towards hormonal balance. We’ll work with your doctor and you’ll see what a difference personalized therapy can make!
Why Should I see a HHRT Consultant?
If you have or have experienced a multiple of the followings symptoms:
Decreased amount of body hair
Gynecomastia (breast enlargement)
Decreased muscle mass and strength
Repeated inability to achieve or maintain an erection
Low sexual interest
Difficulty urinating and/or emptying your bladder completely
If you are concerned about prostate health
HHRT for Women
Many wonder if HHRT has been around for so long, why haven’t they heard of it? The answer is simple. Naturally occurring substances are not patentable. Therefore, patents cannot be obtained for bio-identical hormones (although their dosage form or delivery method may be patentable). When patents are not possible, funds cannot be raised to do large clinical studies. Regardless, there are hundreds of references and a growing number of experts practicing in this specialty field.
In the past few years we have seen controversy regarding women’s health issues. Recent studies on hormone replacement therapy are terrifying women. They are confused, scared and at the very least in the dark as to how to live their life with quality. Women and their health care providers alike must know that HRT and HHRT are NOT synonymous.
What is conventional HRT?
It is taking a hormone or hormones (often equine estrogens and/or synthetic progestins) and substituting them into the body prior to, during or post menopause. These hormones are created to mimic effects of hormones that are present in the human body, but they are NOT identical in structure or activity to natural hormones they replace.
What was the goal of conventional HRT?
Studies have shown that when our hormones begin to become unbalanced, our bodies become more prone to certain disease states. The goal was to provide women with the proper balance of hormones to reduce these disease risks. The idea has been to try to mimic what our body naturally produces and then to replace it, decreasing our risk of disease. As a result, for many years HRT has been synthesized and put into our bodies for long term use. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) concluded: the “overall health risks [of HRT] exceeded benefits from use of combined estrogen plus progestins” (aka: conventional HRT). Though efforts have been well intentioned, they have not worked according to plan.
What is human hormone replacement therapy (HHRT)?
Human hormone replacement therapy has the exact chemical structure and activity as hormones produced by our body before menopause. They are derived from yam or soy plants and have been chemically processed in a laboratory to become identical to what our bodies naturally produce. HHRT is customized therapy to fit each individual; one size does NOT fit all.
What are the goals of HHRT?
The goals of HHRT are to alleviate the effects caused by natural decreases in the production of hormones by the body. When we are supplementing hormones, we typically look at: estradiol, estriol, estrone, testosterone, progesterone, DHEA, pregnenolone and cortisol. Perimenopause symptoms frequently begin in a woman’s mid 30’s. HHRT is unique as it replaces the bio-identical hormones in the patient with customized doses to provide the positive benefits of hormone balance. The ultimate goal is to achieve and maintain the body’s natural hormonal balance.
Factors that must be taken into consideration when beginning HHRT
Xenoestrogens (pesticides, synthetic hormones fed to animals, plastics, cosmetics), obesity, high stress lifestyle, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise contribute to hormonal imbalance. In order to properly balance ones hormones individual lifestyle modifications need to be addressed. Our consultants can gain much of the needed information from the detailed questionaire as well as during the consultation to help you make the lifestyle adjustments necessary for proper hormone balance.
Utilizing a Gene SNP (single nucleotide polymorphisms) test, you can find out if there is a problem with your detoxification pathways. The detoxification process is very nutrient dependent. Therefore, adequate nutrition is essential for effective detoxification of estrogen and other prescription medications and supplements.
Veterinary Compounding Needs
We assist veterinarians by providing suitable medications for their patients. Many times drugs that are designed for people need to be adjusted to fit the needs of animals. It’s hard to reason with a cat as to why they should take their medicine or the reward that awaits them if the don’t bite you in the process.
Different species have different tastes. We take that, as well as your pet's personal tastes, into account when designing our formulations.
We are able to develop custom solutions in the form of “treats”, so owners don’t have to fight with their pets when administering prescriptions. Formulations also need to be made to modify dosages and drug combinations or recreate a discontinued product. All in a day's work at Ladd Family Pharmacy.
Our customized approach improves compliance and outcomes while simplifying the delivery of quality veterinarian care. Not only are we as specialized as your needs, we are also as specialized at your pet's needs!
